Hi there! I’m Barrie Jane and I’m so glad you found me. If you are here, it means you have most likely connected with my work in some way and I am grateful for that. So thank you!
Family photography is my true passion. I see beauty in the chaos of everyday life. Being able to tell your family’s unique story and capture authentic moments and interactions is what it is all about for me.

I am a mother to a delightfully spunky daughter and 3 sweet and energetic sons. These 4, along with my amazing husband, keep me busy, inspired, and are truly the biggest driving force behind why I do what I do everyday. Before becoming a photographer full time, I was an insurance agent for many years, also working in restaurants and a casino. Working with children and playing a part in shaping their little lives is incredibly rewarding. However, I began to feel an undeniable pull towards a more creative path (my cricut and I had to take the break) that allowed me to be more authentically me. Which eventually lead me here!
My husband purchased my first Digital SLR camera for me as a gift about 18 years ago. From that moment on, I have been documenting my own children and our crazy, messy, wonderful life! I love the creative outlet that this gives me and truly love creating art from our family stories.
I love all things coffee, wine and chocolate. Even better if I can find a way to combine any of them. We will one day find a way to live near the ocean, but for now traveling anywhere near water will do the trick. We are an adventurous family and love to explore new places and hang outdoors. Hiking, sledding, bowling, biking and swimming are just a few of our favorites. I grew up in BC and call Alberta my home now. I love listening to all types of music, and may have a tiny obsession with Adam Levine (not Maroon 5, just Adam).
Every family has a story. I would be honored to tell your story through the art of photographs. Connect with me on Instagram or Facebook Barrie Jane Photography and send me a message to let me know a little more about you! Let’s chat about scheduling your family’s session.

As an avid sports fan, I relish the opportunity to create unique and vivid photographs for the players & team. Your pictures should spark joy, tell a story, and remind you of it ALL. The super hero cape as clothing phase; the messy face and uncombed hair; the handstand obsession; or the way they smelled as a newborn baby. I value experiences over things, and authenticity over perfection. Family Lifestyle Photographer in Lacombe, Red Deer, Blackfalds, Sylvan Lake & area.
A: Families get nervous with small children when I mention that these sessions generally start between 7:00 - 8:00PM depending on time of year. Photography is the capture of light and colour. Light is what our eyes see also in a very similar way. As you will see in a sunrise/sunset. Its that glow of colours, and happiness. It is just so much more beautiful than that sun at mid-day. Trust me, I am all about a beautiful sunny day....but not so much the brilliant, reflective, harsh light that it brings to my eye or my camera.
A: YES absolutely! We value a good quality print from our lab and we know you would to! These prints are from a Canadian print lab that we have used for many years and are confident in the quality. WE recommend using our Lab in Canada, as we support Canadian businesses. They get shipped straight to your home.
A: The retainer is 50% to secure the date/time of your photography session of choice (non-refundable), Remainder balance due 3 days before session.
A: Yes, upon a signed print release Barrie Jane Photography gives you the permission to develop your images at a facility of your choice, we are not responsible for the processing of your product from ink quality, paper or delivery of your photos. You may purchase prints from our Lab. Pricing is very cost efficient for you once you are a client! We can only guarantee prints & product from the print lab we use.
A: All images from your session are edited and proofed. Then are emailed to you in high resolution in an online selection gallery for you to select your most loved ones from your session. You will receive your images within a timely manner - typically around 2-3 weeks for family documentary sessions unless otherwise noted. Extended Family session can be 4 weeks.
A: Family Sessions are online in an online viewing selection gallery that is password protected and online for 30 days to view in your beautifully edited images. You will be sent a friendly reminder email that your gallery is expiring about 1 week before your 30 Days. Once you have confirmed your gallery with no extra edits and/or you selected your images based on package, we send out the PIN with download instructions for the gallery/selected images and you have 7 days to download with the PIN assigned to you.
A: We get many questions with extended family or friends requesting images from YOUR session. Especially from Weddings or your Family images they see on our Facebook. Our contract is solely signed with YOU, and respect our clients privacy, we don't allow others to download or purchase them. Upon your approval we can allow them access to purchase prints only. Our online gallery is password protected to enter and view based on your package - we encourage you to share your gallery through our webpage here, https://barriejane.ca/view-your-gallery and share with them the password and they can have a VIEW only access as our images are fully watermarked to protect from any 'screenshots'. If you would like them to purchase their own prints, we can set them up for them upon your request.
A: Yes, we can upload your images again from your session if your viewing gallery has been expired beyond the 30 days or Wedding/Elopements of 3 months. We do charge a $45 fee and can reload your images for another 30 days or 3 months that is password protected. Please note that 60 days from your session date we purge the images from our hard drive, and keep only ones for advertising purposes - these images are selected at the photographers discretion. NOTE: images are purged from the photographers hard drive after 2 months and only a selection are kept for the photographers use.
Thanks so much for booking a session with Barrie Jane Photography! Here are some tips on what to wear and styling that can be helpful in preparing for your upcoming shoot.
When shooting family portraits, the way all the outfits and accessories of each family member are in harmony will truly be the icing on the cake and pull everything together. Make sure to follow these tips to get the best out of your family photo session:
Decide on a color scheme and stick to it. Keep your family’s favorite colors in mind (what color scheme is your home?) and try to coordinate the colors within the scheme. Don’t go for one color for all family members, but choose a couple of colors that are in harmony.
Try to limit prints and patterns as much as possible. It might sound like fun to give dad a sweater with a funky print or let your little ones wear their favorite Disney character on their shirt, but these elements can be quite distracting on the final picture. Its the first thing people look at when they see the photograph - the logos.
Choose timeless and classic items. Your family photo will be treasured for years to come, so go for clothing that is timeless and classic. Will you still like what you’re wearing ten, twenty, thirty years from now?
Make sure your clothing will not blend in with your background. Are you going for a photo session in the woods? Try to limit greens in your clothing.
For the Kids
For the girls, dresses and skirts are always a go-to! Especially for those fun twirling pictures! And boys look fantastic in slacks, button-ups or jeans just like Dad. Little touches like hair accessories, bow ties and suspenders can add the perfect finishing touch to your photos. I always recommend trying the kiddo’s clothing on ahead of the session to make sure that it fits and they are comfortable in it. This can save a lot of headaches on picture day! Logo free clothing is best and less distracting when you view the final images.
Use accessories. Cool hats, flowers in the hair, jewelry, jackets etc. - all these items will bring out your little one’s unique personality on top of their outfit. Try bringing some props they like. Think what could make for a nice prop to play around with during the session. Interaction with an item will help loosen them up and make the session more enjoyable.
Coordinating and Colour
There is an old fashioned idea floating around that everyone in the picture needs to match. This is not true! Choose colors that look nice together, but don't fall into the trap that you all need to be wearing the exact same outfit or color. Coordinating is far better than matching. Your photos will be far more interesting with some variation!
I always recommend having at least three core colors in your palette. After you’ve selected your own outfit, take a look at the accent colors in it, and use those to tie in the outfits of everyone else. Keep it interesting by keeping each person’s primary color different. For example, if you are wearing a cream dress with blush accents/accessories and brown leather shoes (with your primary color being cream), your husband could wear navy slacks with a simple cream or blue shirt and tan blazer (his primary color being tan); one child could wear a blush dress with cream accents, and another could wear khaki slacks with a cream shirt and a navy vest.
Choose what to wear - Whether you want to keep it casual with jeans and a blouse or wear a flowing maternity dress ( client closet available for you ), or even both, take time before your session to choose your outfits and make sure they fit and look the way you wan them to look. You should also pick out clothing for another family member who will be apart of the session - outfits that coordinate/compliment you and not clash with your own. Keep your colours simple, you and your baby bump will be the primary focus on your images, so you don't want to wear any bright colours or loud patterns that will distract. Instead stick with neutral colours and jewel tones that will look great with any background and skin tone. Make sure you have the right undergarments - bras and panties. For example if you're wearing white you don't want to wear dark colours as it will show through, also undergarments that are not tight/dig into your side. I always recommend nude underwear, strapless bras and some (not tight - or tight elastics) black and white underwear.
Your hands will appear in almost all of your images, so you want them looking good! Continue the pampering with a visit to your hairstylist or makeup artist - If you are not sure how to have your hair done, think about what you want your photos to look like. If you are wanting a more casual look, a loose and simple hairstylist may be the perfect option. Your maternity session is the perfect excuse to pamper yourself a little!

The best time to take your photos is in your third trimester, between 28-32 weeks. At this point your BABY BUMP will be showing well and look great in photos, and you will still be able to move around and pose comfortably.
Decide on who to bring with you - Your family members are absolutely welcome at your session, especially if you want to include your spouse or other children. We normally photograph them right away in your casual clothes as that is what you are most comfortable in, then we can change into a dress from our Client Closet (totally optional). Its a good idea to make plans for someone to pick them up when they're finished. That way they don't have to sit through all the individual shots of you, and you don't have to worry about keeping them calm or entertained. Keep in mind that extra people can be a distraction and can even make you feel less comfortable in front of the camera, so avoid bringing friends and extended family members along.
Every photographer is different and every mom-to-be is different as well. You'll want to find someone whose style of photography fits with your vision of a perfect maternity session. Every photographer has their way of editing style from light & airy to dark & moody - find one that fits you, and what you plan to do with the images after your session. If there are any specific image you want - or don't want - be sure to let your photographer know. Talk to your photographer about what images are important to you and whether you're interested in doing partial or implied nudes. Its important to let your photographer know what you're comfortable with before your session so they can better plan out what shots and poses to do.
We encourage you to bring any sentimental items, anything special you want to include, whether its that family heirloom, your ultrasound photo, or even a baby blanket and childhood toy - these mementos can add special meaning and personal touch.
